Amanda Pizarro began as a casual foodie, but now fuels her passion as the co-owner of the hottest donut shop in Miami. She may not have invented the donut, but she has certainly helped popularize the artisan donut in “The Magic City.”
After traveling the country, researching craft donuts, Amanda and her husband formulated a plan to open a shop of their own in Miami, seeing an opportunity in its culinary landscape. “What are [people] buying? What flavors are there? Pricing?” Though the University of Miami graduate never pursued an education in culinary arts, she still felt confident she could bring a little more flavor to her hometown. “I feel whether you study something or not, if you love it enough, it’ll be even better than if you went to school for it.”
Beginning in a pop-up camper with a staff of three in 2015, The Salty Donut opened its first permanent location a year later. The thriving business immediately outgrew its 150 square-foot kitchen and now leases a 2300 square-foot kitchen. Currently, the shop receives five deliveries of delicious donuts a day from its kitchen, selling from morning until they are gone. Five years after the idea was conceived, the Miami hotspot has over 40 employees and is ready to open a second location.
Through all of this, Amanda has learned to trust the process. “It’s never going to be that you’re starting something and it’s easy and fun. You’re going to have moments that suck, and that’s what’s going to make it better. We’ve gone through some pretty crappy experiences and we know this is a learning process. We know that process makes it that much better.”
Driven by an overachieving spirit, in a city full of hotspots, Amanda took a risk, bringing something to Miami that was missing. With daily lines, high demand, and a constantly evolving menu, The Salty Donut was a leap worth taking.
